Fourth Circuit Hears Debate Over Prison Video Calls for Deaf

A Fourth Circuit panel heard arguments Thursday over whether a North Carolina prison violated a deaf civil detainee’s First Amendment rights by not allowing him to use a videophone to contact people on the outside.

Thomas Heyer, who has been deaf since birth, first sued the Bureau of Prisons in 2011 over its failure to provide American Sign Language interpreters for medical and mental health treatment and religious services, access to a videophone and warning lights in his cell.

The pandemic’s impact on kids in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community — and how parents and educators are creating their new normal

When Amanda Cooper found out her 8-year-old son Cason, who is Deaf, wasn’t returning to in-person school in March she said she immediately felt afraid.

“That is the best way that I know how to describe it,” Cooper, who is hearing, told CBS News. Her family moved to St. Augustine, Florida, so Cason would be able to attend Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind and be immersed in ASL and Deaf culture. “It was just extremely frightening. I know within my heart that I could not provide Cason with what he needed, as much as the teachers at his school could,” she added.

And she likely wasn’t the only parent who felt this way.

Man overcomes being deaf, blind to work with Marine Corps Recruitment Depot

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A deaf and legally blind man was promoted to the Marine Corps Recruitment Depot as a Prep Chef last week and is thrilled to be back to work.

Kevin Tong was born deaf in Vietnam and moved with his family to San Diego when he was 13.

He fell in love with cooking during an internship and started working in hotels, honing his skills in the kitchen.

In his 20s another challenge hit, his vision started to go dark.
